A Swedish Art Nouveau vase in flintware/faience by ceramic artist Josef Ekberg in 1921 for porcelain company Gustavsberg (one of the oldest porcelain companies in Sweden, originating in 1826) . This vase is a lovely example of the sgraffito technique that Josef Ekberg developed for Gustavsberg. The technique consists of applying two layers of contrasting glaze to an un-fired piece and then carefully carving the design into the surface to reveal the inner layer. The result is this beautiful flower and leaves motif in blue shades, a perfect representation of Swedish Jugend (Art Nouveau). Ekberg’s signature is visible at the bottom of the vase together with the year it was made (1921) and Gustavsberg. Age appropriate wear with small marks (see images) but overall in a very good condition.
