A pair of antique Art Nouveau candlesticks produced by the German Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) in the beginning of the 20th century. With their four footed square base, their pierced stands and delicate ornaments, these silver-plated candle sticks are truly unique and a wonderful example of the German Art Nouveau style (the Jugendstil).
The items produced by WMF between 1900 and 1910 is often considered amongst the best examples of European Art Nouveau and similar candle sticks are illustrated on page 114 of the “Art Nouveau Domestic Design from Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik”, a reprint of the original 1906 WMF catalogue showcasing thousands of WMF products (published by the Antique Collectors Club). One of the candlesticks has the impressed WMF maker’s mark to one foot, along with ‘EP’ – Electro-plated and ‘OX’ – Oxidised. Age appropriate wear with marks but overall in a very good condition.
